S.E. Shires C Trumpets

All S. E. Shires trumpets feature a one piece, hand hammered bell with a traditionally brazed seam, hand-lapped Monel pistons, and of course the careful assembly and handcrafted methods that the S. E. Shires Company proudly embodies with its slogan: Quality without compromise.

In a similar manner to our world-renowned trombones, Shires trumpets are available with a large variety of options in bells, leadpipes, tuning slides, and weights. For the very best response and projection, Shires trumpets are built in a fixed construction rather than the modular style utilized for our trombones.

Standard models include the leadpipe and tuning slide options determined to be the best fit for the body and bell type, standard mother-of-pearl inlay finger buttons, and are available in silverplate, lacquer, or raw brass.

S.E. Shires developed the Model 4F in conjunction with Thomas Rolfs, Principal Trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Its sound retains beauty and core from a remarkably present pp to a glorious ff.

Model 401 (TR401) $3,695
• .462"-bore,two-piece, standard-weight valve cluster with yellow brass balusters
• "401" bell flare, one-piece, balanced heavy-weight, yellow brass; power, beauty, flexibility, clear articulations, and easy response
• "401" leadpipe, open and free-blowing taper, flexible slot .351" venturi

The S.E. Shires Model 401 trumpet is the latest version of our original signature C trumpet. It features a uniquely balanced, somewhat heavier “4” bell taper, which combines a big, powerful sound with easy response. The bell bend of the 401 differs from that of the 4F or 401B in that it is bent slightly shorter, resulting in a different Z-brace placement. For many players, this can solidfy the feel and quicken response. Matched with the open 401 leadpipe and the centered and projecting WF tuning slide, it produces an ideal balance of breadth, clarity, depth and projection. Yellow-brass balusters add warmth to the sound while nickel-silver valve caps add brilliance and character, increase its core, and contribute to cleanness and immediacy of attack. The Model 419B is an incredible orchestral C trumpet.

Model 401B $3,695
• .462"-bore,two-piece, standard-weight valve cluster with yellow brass balusters
• "401B" bell flare, one-piece, balanced heavy-weight, yellow brass in traditional-length bend; power, beauty, flexibility, clear articulations, and easy response
• "401" leadpipe, open and free-blowing taper, flexible slot .351" venturi

The Model 401B features a uniquely balanced, somewhat heavier “4” bell taper, which combines a big, powerful sound with easy response. The Model 401B is an incredible orchestral C trumpet.

Model 4MWF $3,695
• .462"-bore, two-piece, standard-weight valve cluster with nickel brass balusters
• "4" bell flare, one-piece yellow brass, standard-weight, French bead—projection, clarity, and brilliance
• "YER" reverse leadpipe—efficient and stable, yet flexible .349" venturi

Inspired by the classic "Chicago C trumpets" of the 1950s, this updated version has a more efficient leadpipe that adds remarkable ease of playing to the brilliant, large-cored sound associated with those instruments.

Model 502 $3,695
• .462"-bore, two-piece, standard-weight valve cluster with nickel brass balusters
• "5" bell flare, one-piece yellow brass, standard weight—agile, warm, and brilliant
• "W9HL" leadpipe, superior intonation with firm, yet flexible slotting and easy response. 349" venturi
Options: standard length "WE" or short "WEB" leadpipe

The Model 502 was developed in collaboration with Boston‐based soloist and trumpet phenomenon Terry Everson. Our most nimble standard model C trumpet, it features a light bell treatment for incredible agility and ease of playing, and a long, efficient leadpipe that provides clear articulations and full, rich, sound that will last for the duration of long concerts or recitals. This model has become a favorite with soloists as well as members of brass quintets and other chamber players.

Model 5F $3,695

• .462"-bore, two-piece, standard-weight valve cluster with nickel brass balusters
• "5" bell flare, one-piece yellow brass, standard-weight, French bead—centered, warm and projecting sound
• "YEB" leadpipe—open and freeblowing, .349" venturi

The Model 5F features a special "5" bell taper with a slightly squarer bell bend, side seam, and French bead. These characteristics give its sound added complexity, cushion the blow slightly, and enhance its projection and power. The bell of the 5F differs from standard "5" bells in that it is bent slightly longer, resulting in a different Z-brace placement. For some players, this can open up the feel on top of the staff and can improve the attack, while maintaining the centered sound of the "5" bell. Matched with a custom leadpipe and W tuning slide, it produces an ideal balance of brilliance, agility, depth and projection. Nickel-silver balusters and valve caps add brilliance and character, increase its core, and contribute to cleanness and immediacy of attack. The Model 5F is an incredible orchestral C trumpet.
